Tots to Travel: Is Carole Smiley to blame?

Country of Origin: United Kingdom.

I watch what rents and what doesn't with an obsessional level of interest.  And it is no coincidence that the properties that book 'fastest and bestest' are those that have a modern, clean interior.  I have watched with fascination as properties that I know well and that are beautiful in every way (location, garden, pool, character etc) linger and malinger simply because they could do with an internal spruce up.

I Blame Carole Smiley!
I put this down to a number of things but Carole Smiley must take her fair share of the blame!  In the UK we have had nearly 20 years of home renovation programmes, including week after week of the BBC's Changing Rooms!  The result is that people have done up their own homes beautifully and so when they go on holiday, they want to stay somewhere that is nice, if not better than their own home.  And who can blame them?

ooooh I wouldn't have done that...!
People, especially women, mentally redecorate wherever they go (pubs, restaurants, friend's houses, holiday properties...) and you can just hear the comments 'oooh I wouldn't have done that' or 'I like the way that they have done so and so...'  Throw in a week's bad weather and you have an even more exaggerated situation.  Your clients will sit on the sofa, watching the rain at the window and critically analyse your taste in interior décor!

No shabby seconds please!
The market has changed.  The shabby seconds that you do not want in your own house are no longer acceptable in your holiday property.  Gone is Granny's old sofa and in comes the clean, fresh, designed look so favoured by the TV programmes.
This means:
1. Matching linen: Preferably white, definitely no ghastly bright colours!
2. Carefully chosen paint colours: Out with the yellow rag rolled walls
3. Be ruthless: Out with Granny's hand-me-downs.  Say no to anything in orange pine.
4. Read up: Buy some interior decoration magazines to get a feel for what's current
5. Know your market: If you are going for 'top end' then your choice of fixtures and fittings needs to reflect this
6. Ask around: ask a friend whose taste you like to help you out with design, your interior has to appeal to the widest possible market
7. Take great photos: Make sure your pics do your place justice.  Terrible photos means that you are falling before you are even off the starting line.  More of this another time!

If you've got empty weeks 's not too late in the season to make some changes.  Take some action and I'm convinced that it'll make a difference!

Warm regards
